Oliver Jones, known as Skream, was born on June 1, 1986, in West Wickham, London. His early exposure to the electronic music scene began as a teenager working at Big Apple Records in Croydon, a hub for the emergent dubstep genre. This environment allowed him to connect with figures like Hatcha, who became the first DJ to play Skream’s dubplates. Jones began producing music at age 15 using FruityLoops, quickly developing a prolific output. His early work involved collaborations with Benga, releasing EPs like ‘The Judgment’ (2003) and ‘Hydro’ (2004) on Big Apple Records.
Skream’s solo single, “Midnight Request Line” (2005), marked a turning point, contributing to a more melodic direction within dubstep and earning critical acclaim. In 2006, he released his debut self-titled album, ‘Skream!,’ which is considered a foundational work in dubstep. Around this time, he started hosting ‘Stella Sessions’ on Rinse FM, later evolving into ‘The Skream and Benga Show’ with Benga. The inclusion of his music in the E4 show ‘Skins’ (2007) and an ‘Essential Mix’ for BBC Radio 1 further broadened his reach.
Jones continued to expand his career, notably co-founding Magnetic Man with Artwork and Benga. Their debut album, ‘Magnetic Man’ (2010), achieved significant commercial success, peaking at number 5 on the UK Albums Chart, with the single “I Need Air” reaching number 10 on the UK Singles Chart. In 2010, he released his second solo album, ‘Outside the Box,’ on Tempa Records. From 2013 onwards, Skream transitioned his focus towards house and disco music, reflecting this shift in his DJ sets and productions. He embarked on the ‘Skreamizm’ tour, playing extended sets in smaller venues, which allowed for greater exploration of these new genres. In 2023, Skream reunited with Benga and SGT Pokes for performances, signaling a return to their dubstep roots.
