Harley Edward Streten, known professionally as Flume, was born on November 5, 1991, in Sydney, Australia. His early exposure to music production began at age 11, experimenting with basic CD mixing software found in a cereal box. This foundational experience sparked his interest in layering sounds and structured music. By 2010, operating under the moniker HEDS, he was producing house music and experimenting with remixes. His initial tracks, “Flow” and “Fizz,” along with several remixes, marked his nascent efforts in the electronic music scene.
Flume’s career gained significant momentum in 2011 when he was signed by Future Classic after submitting tracks like “Sleepless,” “Over You,” and “Paper Thin” to an original artists competition. He adopted the name “Flume” from a Bon Iver song, and his debut EP, “Sleepless,” was subsequently released. The breakthrough arrived with his self-titled debut album in 2012, which quickly topped the ARIA Albums Chart and achieved double-platinum status in Australia. The album’s success led to a North American release through Mom + Pop Music in 2013, garnering strong critical acclaim and a Metacritic score of 73 out of 100. This period also saw four of his tracks make the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2012, with “Holdin On” reaching number four, establishing his presence both domestically and internationally.
His second studio album, “Skin,” released in 2016, further solidified his global standing. It debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart and earned him a Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2017. The lead single, “Never Be Like You” featuring Kai, was a chart-topping hit in Australia and received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording. Following “Skin,” Flume released two B-side EPs, “Skin Companion EP 1” and “Skin Companion EP 2,” in late 2016 and early 2017, respectively. In 2019, he released the critically acclaimed mixtape “Hi This Is Flume,” which was nominated for Best Dance/Electronic Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. His third studio album, “Palaces,” was released in May 2022, followed by two mixtapes in 2023, showcasing his continued evolution and creative output.
