Joshua Spence Mainnie, known professionally as Barry Can’t Swim, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in August 1992. His musical journey began at age nine when his grandfather acquired a piano. Mainnie pursued formal music education at Edinburgh Napier University, where he also discovered the UK electronic music scene, becoming inspired by artists such as Jamie xx and Daniel Avery. This period marked a turning point, influencing him to apply his fundamental knowledge of piano, guitar, and drums to electronic production. He moved to London to further his career.
Mainnie released his debut self-released track, “Because I Wanted You To Know,” in 2020. This was followed by his debut EP, “Amor Fati,” released through Shall Not Fade in July 2021. In 2022, he released “More Content” via Technicolour Records, an imprint of Ninja Tune. His debut full-length album, “When Will We Land?” was released on October 20, 2023, through Ninja Tune. This album achieved commercial success, charting at #12 in the UK Albums Charts and earning him a nomination for Best Dance Act at the 2024 Brit Awards and a shortlist for the 2024 Mercury Prize. He won the BBC Radio 1’s award for “Best Dance Album” for this work.
In December 2023, Mainnie received the DJ Mag ‘Breakthrough Producer’ award. The following year, he performed at Coachella 2024, closing with a surprise back-to-back DJ set with Bonobo. His second album, “Loner,” was released on July 11, 2025, also through Ninja Tune. This album received universal acclaim, with a Metacritic score of 84 out of 100. Barry Can’t Swim has transitioned from a club DJ to a live electronic act, undertaking sold-out tours globally, including significant appearances at Glastonbury (UK) and festivals across Europe, North America, and Australia.
