Oliver Heldens, born Olivier J. L. Heldens on February 1, 1995, in Rotterdam, Netherlands, commenced his professional music career by signing with Spinnin’ Records in 2013. His early releases on the label included tracks “Stinger” and “Thumper.” His 2013 song “Gecko” attracted the attention of DJ Tiësto, leading to its release under Tiësto’s label, Musical Freedom. A vocal version, “Gecko (Overdrive),” featuring British singer Becky Hill, subsequently reached number 1 on the UK Top 40 chart in June 2014. In January 2014, Heldens launched the Heldeep Mixtape on SoundCloud, showcasing extended mixes across various electronic music genres, including deep house and tech-house, and notably included his remix of Martin Garrix’s “Animals.” He also released “Koala” on Spinnin’ in August 2014, which became a highly searched dance recording at the 2014 Amsterdam Dance Event.
In 2015, Heldens established his record label, Heldeep Records, intended as a platform for emerging artists. The first track released on this label was “Renegade Mastah” under his techno alias, HI-LO. This alias, derived from “Oli H” reversed, allowed him to explore a deeper, more underground sound. Heldeep Records has since expanded, signing artists such as Alok, Chocolate Puma, and Dada Life, and has hosted stages at major festivals including Tomorrowland, Mysteryland, and Electric Forest. In December 2014, Heldens made his debut on the DJ Mag Top 100, ranking at number 34, and by 2015, he reached number 12, becoming the highest-ranked house DJ on the list. His weekly radio show, Heldeep Radio, which premiered in January 2016, is syndicated globally, reaching over 118 million listeners weekly across 90 stations.
Heldens continued to expand his musical footprint under both his main alias and HI-LO. In 2018, he signed with RCA Records, where his single “Fire in My Soul” reached number 1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. His 2019 collaboration with Riton and Vula, “Turn Me On,” peaked at number 10 on the Global Shazam Top 200 and number 12 on the UK Top 40 chart. The HI-LO alias saw increased focus from 2020 onward, with releases such as “Kronos,” “Zeus,” and “Athena,” and collaborations with techno artists including Reinier Zonneveld, leading to tracks like “Saw of Olympus” and “String Theory” released on Zonneveld’s Filth On Acid label. HI-LO also released “Hypnos” and “Hera” on Drumcode Records, initiating a partnership with Adam Beyer. Heldens also founded a second label, OH2 Records, in 2020, focusing on vocal house songs. His performances include major festivals globally, such as Coachella, Glastonbury, Lollapalooza, and Ultra, complemented by residencies in Las Vegas and Ibiza.
