Electric Guest was formed in 2011 in Los Angeles by Asa Taccone and Matthew “Cornbread” Compton. Their collaboration began when Taccone rented a room previously occupied by Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton, where Compton, a session drummer, also resided. Burton heard early demos of their work and encouraged them to create an album over the span of a year. This initial period of collaboration and mentorship laid the groundwork for their distinctive musical style, which incorporates influences from various genres, including hip-hop, soul, and indie artists.
The band released their debut album, “Mondo,” on April 24, 2012. The album quickly gained attention for its “Beck-ian journey into L.A. slacker soul,” featuring catchy, neon-tinged tracks. “Mondo” was co-produced by Danger Mouse, formalizing the relationship that began in their shared living space. Following the album’s release, Electric Guest made television appearances, performing their single “This Head I Hold” on shows like the “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” and “Conan.” Their music also found its way into popular U.S. television series, including “Teen Wolf,” HBO’s “Girls,” and “Suits.” The band was recognized by MTV, being featured on their list of Artists to Watch in 2012, and by NME as their Radar Band of the Week in February 2013.
Electric Guest continued to build their discography with the release of their second album, “Plural,” on February 17, 2017, and their third album, “Kin,” on October 18, 2019. Their most recent album, “10K,” was released on October 10, 2025. Over the years, the band has consistently toured, with a lineup that includes Luke Top on bass and Reese Richardson on keyboards/guitar for live performances. They have played at major national and international festivals such as SXSW, Bonnaroo Music Festival, Sasquatch, Outside Lands, Montreux, Splendour in the Grass, and Leeds Festival, consistently selling out shows and cultivating a dedicated fanbase across the globe.
