About

Honey Redmond, known professionally as Honey Dijon, was born in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in a musical, middle-class African-American family on the south side of Chicago in the 1970s. Her parents allowed her to attend clubs in her mid-teens as long as her academics did not suffer. She began performing as a DJ in the 1990s and became active as a producer around 2000. During her early career in Chicago, she was mentored by DJs and producers such as Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, and Greenskeepers. She later moved to New York in the late 1990s, where she was introduced to Maxi Records and Danny Tenaglia. She performed on New York City’s underground club circuit and at fashion shows, developing a rambunctious DJ style that incorporates golden-era disco, techno, and house.

Dijon released her debut album, “The Best of Both Worlds,” in 2017, followed by “Black Girl Magic” in 2022. She has gained recognition for her work, receiving a Grammy nomination in 2022 as an album of the year contributor for Beyoncé’s “Renaissance,” and a Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2023. Her career has seen her play approximately 180 shows in 2022, including club nights, festivals, and fashion events. She curated the opening club night of Grace Jones’ Meltdown festival in June 2022, bringing artists like Sippin’ T and Josey Rebelle to the Southbank Centre in London.

Beyond her musical career, Honey Dijon is also a trans activist. She publicly came out as transgender shortly after moving to New York in the late 1990s. As a Black trans woman DJ in dance music, she advocates for trans rights and awareness while navigating the music and fashion industries. She has collaborated with major luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton and Dior, providing soundtracks for their runway presentations. Her work in high fashion, coupled with her background, highlights a significant political element, demonstrating visibility and achievement for Black trans women in these spaces. She was also featured in the BBC documentary series “Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution.”
