LCD Soundsystem, formed in 2002 by James Murphy in Brooklyn, New York, is an American dance-punk revival band known for its unique blend of electronic dance music and punk rock. The band’s core members include James Murphy (vocals, various instruments), Nancy Whang (synthesizer, keyboards, vocals), and Pat Mahoney (drums). Their journey began with a series of singles released on DFA Records, co-founded by Murphy. The 2004 single “Losing My Edge” became an underground dance hit, setting the stage for their self-titled debut album in 2005. This album received critical acclaim, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Electronic/Dance Album, while their single “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House” was nominated for Best Dance Recording.
Following their debut, LCD Soundsystem continued to innovate with releases like “45:33” (2006), a specially commissioned composition for Nike’s Nike+ Original Run series. Their second studio album, “Sound of Silver” (2007), also garnered critical recognition and a Grammy nomination in the electronic/dance category. The band achieved its first top-ten album in the United States with “This Is Happening” in 2010. After a planned farewell concert at Madison Square Garden in 2011, documented in “Shut Up and Play the Hits,” the band reunited in 2015. Their comeback was marked by the release of “Christmas Will Break Your Heart” and subsequently, their fourth studio album, “American Dream” (2017), which became their first number-one album in the U.S. “American Dream” received a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album, and the single “Tonite” won Best Dance Recording, marking their first Grammy win.
LCD Soundsystem has maintained an active presence through concert residencies and collaborations. In recent years, they have performed residencies in Brooklyn, Boston, London, and San Francisco. They contributed the song “New Body Rhumba” to the soundtrack of the 2022 film “White Noise” and have collaborated with other artists, such as providing backing vocals for Idles’ single “Dancer” in 2023. Currently, the band is working on a fifth studio album between concert dates, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to a blend of studio recording and live performances, solidifying their position in the electronic rock genre.
