M83 was formed in Antibes, France, in 1999 by Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau. The project, named after the spiral galaxy Messier 83, quickly garnered attention for its expansive electronic soundscapes. Early releases helped to define their unique blend of shoegaze, electronic music, and ambient textures. Fromageau departed in 2001, leaving Gonzalez as the primary creative force behind M83, continuing to evolve the project’s sound with each subsequent release.
Over the years, M83 has achieved significant milestones in the music industry. Their 2011 album, “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming,” featuring the breakout single “Midnight City,” brought them widespread international recognition and commercial success. This period marked a turning point, with their music being extensively featured in films, television, and advertising, demonstrating their broad appeal. M83’s work is characterized by its cinematic quality, often incorporating orchestral elements and layered synthesizers to create immersive auditory experiences.
