Múm is an acclaimed Icelandic indietronica band that has captivated audiences since its formation in 1997. The original lineup, consisting of Gunnar Örn Tynes and Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason, along with twin sisters Gyða and Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir, laid the foundation for a unique sound characterized by soft vocals, electronic glitch beats, and a blend of traditional and unconventional instruments. Their debut album, “Yesterday Was Dramatic – Today Is OK,” released in 1999, showcased their innovative approach and garnered critical acclaim, setting the stage for their future successes.
As the band evolved, they embraced new musical influences and expanded their lineup. Following the departure of Gyða and Kristín in 2006, Tynes and Smárason welcomed a diverse group of talented musicians, including Ólöf Arnalds and Hildur Guðnadóttir. This collective recorded the album “Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy,” released in 2007, which further solidified their reputation in the indietronica scene. Their ability to blend various genres and styles has allowed Múm to maintain a fresh and engaging sound throughout their career.
In 2009, Múm released “Sing Along to Songs You Don’t Know,” showcasing their continued growth and experimentation. The album was well-received, and they followed it up with the release of “Smilewound” in 2013, which further demonstrated their artistic evolution. Their music has not only resonated with fans but has also been featured in various soundtracks, enhancing their visibility in the music industry.
Celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2019, Múm reissued their debut album and embarked on a European and Chinese tour, reaffirming their status as pioneers in the indietronica genre. With a discography that includes multiple albums, EPs, and collaborations, Múm continues to inspire and innovate, making significant contributions to the music landscape.
