Nick Rotteveel, professionally known as Nicky Romero, was born on January 6, 1989, in Amerongen, Utrecht Province, Netherlands. He spent a year in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, before returning to the Netherlands and completing his education with semesters in France. His career in music commenced in 2007 with releases like “Privilege” and “Qwerty” on Once Records, followed by tracks such as “Funktion One.” His early work included remixes for Tony Cha Cha’s “Get on the Floor” and a bootleg for David Guetta’s “When Love Takes Over,” which helped raise his profile and led to remixing opportunities with Ministry of Sound. In 2010, his track “My Friend” gained significant attention, charting at Number 4 on Beatport’s worldwide overall chart and Number 1 on the Dance-Tunes chart.
Romero achieved mainstream success in 2012 with “Toulouse,” a recording that consistently appeared on the Beatport Top Ten. This recognition led MTV to name him an EDM artist to watch in 2012, and he secured a joint residency with David Guetta in Ibiza for the summer. In October 2012, he received the ‘Highest New Entry’ award on DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs poll, placing at number 17. The following year, he collaborated with Avicii on “I Could Be the One,” which became a number one single in the UK in February 2013, marking a significant milestone for both artists. Building on this success, Romero released “Symphonica” in 2013, which also reached No. 1 on the Beatport Top 100 chart, and his collaboration “Legacy” with Krewella achieved similar success.
His career progression also includes significant festival appearances, such as Ultra Music Festival, Coachella, Electric Daisy Carnival, Sensation White, and Tomorrowland. At TomorrowWorld, he was an early adopter of Google Glass for an interactive performance. In 2013, he peaked at number 7 on DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs annual fan poll. Beyond his releases, Romero has co-produced tracks for major artists, including “Right Now” from Rihanna’s album “Unapologetic” (2012) and “It Should Be Easy” for Britney Spears’ album “Britney Jean.” He also co-produced “Bang My Head” and “No Money No Love” for David Guetta’s 2014 album “Listen.” In 2012, Romero founded Protocol Recordings, a Dutch record label that has since released music from various electronic artists and served as a platform for emerging talent. He continues to run his weekly radio show, Protocol Radio.
