About

Adam Young, known as Owl City, is an American singer-songwriter and musician born on July 5, 1986, in Ottumwa, Iowa, and raised in Owatonna, Minnesota. Before his mainstream success, Young worked at a Coca-Cola shipping warehouse and UPS, composing melodies in his parents’ basement. He began uploading these songs to MySpace, gaining early attention. In 2007, he released his debut EP, “Of June,” followed by the independent album “Maybe I’m Dreaming” in 2008. These early releases laid the groundwork for his distinctive electronica and synth-pop style, characterized by fuzzy synths and melodic arrangements.

In February 2009, Owl City signed with Universal Republic, which led to the release of his breakthrough album, “Ocean Eyes,” in July 2009. The album featured the Diamond-certified single “Fireflies,” which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for two non-consecutive weeks and achieved international success, topping charts in Ireland, Australia, Denmark, and the Netherlands. Following this, he released “All Things Bright and Beautiful” in 2011 and “The Midsummer Station” in 2012. The latter included the hit single “Good Time” with Carly Rae Jepsen, reaching number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. Young also composed “When Can I See You Again?” for Disney’s “Wreck-It Ralph” in 2012, which received an Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement for Music in a Feature Production in 2013.

Throughout his career, Young has explored various musical projects beyond Owl City, including Port Blue for instrumental ambient music, Sky Sailing for acoustic-driven songs, and Windsor Airlift for pop-punk and post-rock. He also collaborated with artists like Paul van Dyk, Chicane, and Armin van Buuren, showcasing his versatility across different genres. In 2015, he released “Mobile Orchestra,” his final album under Republic Records, before venturing into independent releases with “Cinematic” (2018) and “Coco Moon” (2023). In 2016, he launched “Adam Young Scores,” a project where he composed a film score each month based on historical events, demonstrating his expansive creative scope and interest in diverse storytelling.
