Christopher Michael Taylor, known professionally as Sohn, was born in South London and developed an early interest in music. He initially gained recognition under the project name Trouble Over Tokyo, releasing four albums before reinventing himself as Sohn. In August 2010, he began releasing music under the Sohn moniker through Soundcloud, with early tracks like “Warnings” and “Oscillate.” His first EP, “The Wheel,” released on November 5, 2012, through the Aesop label, earned critical acclaim for its distinctive sound.
Sohn’s career advanced significantly in April 2013 when he signed with the renowned 4AD label. His first official release with 4AD, “Bloodflows,” was praised by Pitchfork as “a vocal showcase and SOHN’s most sorrowful, powerful success yet.” This led to the release of his debut album, “Tremors,” on April 7, 2014, featuring tracks like “Artifice.” He subsequently moved to Los Angeles in 2015, where he expanded his work as a producer for artists such as Aquilo, Banks, and Kwabs, before relocating to Sonoma to work on his second album. His song “Carry Me Home” was featured in “The Divergent Series: Insurgent” soundtrack in 2015.
His second studio album, “Rennen,” was released on January 13, 2017, preceded by singles like “Signal,” which included a video featuring actress Milla Jovovich, and “Conrad.” In June 2020, Sohn released the live album “Live with the Metropole Orkest,” a recording of a 2019 performance in Amsterdam with the 54-person Metropole Orkest. His third studio album, “Trust,” was released digitally on September 2, 2022, and physically on November 4, 2022. Most recently, his fourth studio album, “Albadas (Dawn Songs),” an instrumental electronic record, was released on October 10, 2025. This album was conceived as a morning ritual to express himself without words and is available in limited vinyl and CD pressings.
