100 Gecs is an American musical duo formed in 2015, consisting of Dylan Brady and Laura Les. The duo originated from the St. Louis area, with Brady and Les meeting in high school. They initially began producing music together in the winter of 2015, recording in Les’s Chicago apartment. Their debut EP, “100 gecs,” was self-released on July 12, 2016. The duo’s unique sound, characterized by a chaotic yet catchy mixture of various styles including hyperpop, experimental pop, electropop, electronic rock, and pop-punk, began to take shape during this early period. Their artistic approach is often described as an anarchic assault on the ears, pulling conventional pop tropes in unpredictable directions.
A turning point for 100 Gecs occurred after a DJ set at the 2019 Minecraft Fire Festival, which led to increased collaboration and the release of their debut album, “1000 gecs,” on May 31, 2019. This album received positive reviews and was instrumental in defining the hyperpop genre. Following its success, they released a companion remix album, “1000 gecs and the Tree of Clues,” in 2020, featuring collaborations with artists like A. G. Cook and Injury Reserve. In the same year, 100 Gecs signed with Atlantic Records, signaling their ambition for broader reach. Their career progression included supporting Brockhampton on the “Heaven Belongs to You Tour” in 2019 and headlining their own “Secret Tour.” They also performed at significant virtual events like Square Garden Minecraft Festival and were featured on Adult Swim’s “FishCenter Live.” In October 2020, they held an artist residency at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.
The duo continued to expand their discography and touring schedule with the release of their second studio album, “10,000 gecs,” in 2023. This album showcased a more mainstream and mature sound, with Laura Les occasionally performing without their characteristic autotune. Supporting acts for their tours have included Tony Velour, Underscores, Aaron Cartier, Alice Gas, and Machine Girl. They have performed at major festivals such as Coachella, BUKU, Ceremonia, Forecastle, Governors Ball, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza. The group has also embarked on supporting tours with prominent acts like Nine Inch Nails and My Chemical Romance, further diversifying their audience and artistic affiliations. Their production style is notable for its use of Logic Pro project file exchanges, which Les has described as an ‘exquisite corpse’ type process, embodying an improvised and genre-blurring approach to music creation.
