Dion Marquise Hayes, known professionally as 42 Dugg, was born on November 25, 1994, and raised in Detroit, Michigan. He attended Denby High School but later dropped out. His musical journey began in 2017, and he gained initial traction with singles like “The Streets” (featuring Babyface Ray) and “STFU” in 2018. His unique slurred vocal delivery, often enhanced with Auto-Tune, and a signature whistle sound quickly became recognizable elements of his music. He grew up listening to artists such as Yo Gotti and Jeezy, who later influenced his career path.
A significant turning point in 42 Dugg’s career came in 2019 when he signed a joint venture deal with Yo Gotti’s Collective Music Group (CMG) and Lil Baby’s Glass Window Entertainment (formerly 4PF), in collaboration with Interscope Records. This partnership led to widespread national attention, particularly through his collaborations with Lil Baby. Their 2020 song “Grace” peaked at number 48 on the Billboard Hot 100, and “We Paid” reached number ten on the same chart, achieving quintuple platinum certification by the RIAA. His second mixtape, *Young & Turnt 2* (2020), also made its debut on the Billboard 200, showcasing his growing artistry. In May 2021, *Billboard* recognized his rapidly ascending career by naming him the “R&B/Hip-Hop Rookie of the Month.”
42 Dugg continued to build on his momentum, releasing his fourth mixtape, *Free Dem Boyz*, in 2021, which peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200. This project included successful singles such as “4 Da Gang” (with Roddy Ricch) and “Maybach” (featuring Future), both of which earned gold certifications. His consistent output and high-profile collaborations solidified his position in the hip-hop scene. He was also featured in the annual *XXL* Freshman Class in 2021, a testament to his impact and potential within the genre.
