About

A Great Big World is a musical duo composed of singer/songwriters Ian Axel and Chad King. They initially met at New York University, where both were enrolled in the Steinhardt Music Program. Their collaboration began when Axel, after hearing King sing, convinced him to write songs together. Prior to officially forming the duo, Axel released an independent album featuring songs co-written by King. The group formally adopted the name A Great Big World in 2012, after gaining initial attention for their individual work and initial collaborations. They subsequently released a six-song EP, funded through the crowdsourcing platform Kickstarter, marking a significant step in their independent career.

The duo’s career gained substantial momentum in 2011 when their song “This Is the New Year” was licensed for various television networks, including MTV’s “I Used to Be Fat,” “The Amazing Race,” ESPN, “One Tree Hill,” and “Good Morning America.” This exposure led to national tours, where they opened for artists like Ingrid Michaelson, Matthew Morrison, and Five for Fighting. A pivotal moment arrived in 2013 when the cast of “Glee” performed “This Is the New Year” in an episode, propelling the song onto the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart. Following this, A Great Big World signed with Epic Records in 2013, releasing a three-song EP under the label and embarking on a headline tour.

The year 2013 proved to be a breakthrough with the release of “Say Something.” The song initially gained traction after being featured on “So You Think You Can Dance.” Its popularity soared when Christina Aguilera, having heard the song, collaborated with the duo on a re-recorded version. This new version, released in November 2013, quickly topped the iTunes charts and reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100. A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera performed “Say Something” live on “The Voice” and at the American Music Awards, further solidifying the song’s success. Their debut album, “Is There Anybody Out There?,” was released in January 2014, followed by “When the Morning Comes” in 2015, which featured collaborations with artists and producers like Futuristic, Dave Eggar, and Kevin Kadish.
