About

Born on March 4, 1977, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Jason Marsalis is the youngest son of pianist and music professor Ellis Marsalis, Jr. At the age of six, he began taking drum lessons from legendary New Orleans drummer James Black. His early musical development saw him sitting in with his father’s jazz group and performing with his trombonist brother, Delfeayo, by age seven. Jason’s dedication led him to make his recording debut on Delfeayo Marsalis’s 1992 release, “Pontius Pilate’s Decision.” He graduated from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) and furthered his education by studying percussion at Loyola University New Orleans, alongside composition with Roger Dickerson. Throughout his formative years, Marsalis honed his skills by performing with various jazz luminaries and diversified his experience across mainstream jazz, funk, jazz fusion, and even Celtic music. This early exposure and rigorous training laid the foundation for his versatile career.
