Anaïs Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho, professionally known as Arlo Parks, was born on August 9, 2000, in Hammersmith, West London. Of Nigerian, Chadian, and French ancestry, Parks learned French before English. She attended Latymer Upper School and completed her A Levels at Ashbourne College in early 2019. Parks developed her artistic identity while feeling like an outsider in secondary school, embracing emo music and poetry, which later informed her lyrical style.
Parks began her music career in 2018 by uploading demos to BBC Music Introducing, which led to her being discovered and managed by Ali Raymond of Beatnik Creative. Her debut single, “Cola,” was released in November 2018 through Beatnik Records, quickly garnering over three million streams on Spotify by November 2019. Following this success, Parks signed with Transgressive Records. Her debut EP, “Super Sad Generation,” was released in April 2019, recorded with producer Gianluca Buccellati. She performed her first gig at The Great Escape in Brighton in May 2019, followed by appearances at Glastonbury Festival and Latitude Festival. In September 2019, she supported Jordan Rakei on the UK leg of his tour. Her second EP, “Sophie,” was released in December 2019.
In 2020, Parks released notable singles “Eugene” and “Black Dog,” the latter becoming BBC Radio 1’s Tune of the Week. She earned the AIM Independent Music Award for One to Watch in 2020. Her critically acclaimed debut studio album, “Collapsed in Sunbeams,” was released on January 29, 2021, peaking at number three on the UK Albums Chart. The album, which takes its name from Zadie Smith’s “On Beauty,” won the 2021 Mercury Prize for Best Album and earned her nominations at the 2021 Brit Awards for Album of the Year, Best New Artist, and Best British Female Solo Artist, winning the Breakthrough Artist Award. Her second album, “My Soft Machine,” was released in May 2023, followed by her debut poetry book, “The Magic Border,” in September 2023. In March 2024, Parks received writing credits for Beyoncé’s song “YA YA” from the album “Cowboy Carter.”
