Ashnikko, whose birth name is Ashton Nicole Casey, was born on February 19, 1996, in Oak Ridge, North Carolina, and spent formative years in Greensboro. Early musical influences stemmed from diverse genres introduced by their parents, ranging from country to Slipknot. A pivotal moment in their youth was discovering M.I.A.’s ‘Arular’ at age 10, which ignited an interest in rap. Their teenage years included living in Estonia and Latvia due to their father’s studies, where they experienced attending a Latvian public high school as the sole American. At 18, Casey relocated independently to London.
Ashnikko’s professional music career began in 2016 with their first song, “Krokodil,” released on SoundCloud. This was followed by their debut EP, ‘Sass Pancakes,’ in 2017, produced by Raf Riley and featuring Avelino. The subsequent EP, ‘Unlikeable,’ released in November 2018, included singles like “Blow” and “Nice Girl.” The ‘Hi It’s Me’ EP in July 2019 marked a significant turning point, with the single “Stupid,” featuring Yung Baby Tate, achieving viral popularity on TikTok. This track reached number one on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart and the Spotify Viral 50, eventually being certified gold in the United States and Canada. Ashnikko also toured North America supporting Danny Brown in October 2019 and contributed to Brooke Candy’s debut album ‘Sexorcism’ as a co-writer.
The period between 2020 and 2021 saw Ashnikko achieve broader recognition. They co-wrote “Boss Bitch” for Doja Cat, featured on the ‘Birds of Prey’ soundtrack. Their single “Cry,” featuring Grimes, was released in June 2020, followed by “Daisy” in July. “Daisy” became a breakthrough hit, charting internationally and peaking at number 24 on the UK Singles Chart. The debut mixtape, ‘Demidevil,’ released in January 2021, included these successful singles. Ashnikko also co-wrote “Frost” for the K-pop group Tomorrow X Together and contributed to Lady Gaga’s remix album ‘Dawn of Chromatica.’ Their debut studio album, ‘Weedkiller,’ was released in 2023, followed by ‘Smoochies’ planned for 2025, supported by extensive world tours. Ashnikko opened for Billie Eilish’s “Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour” in 2024–2025 and performed “Paint The Town Blue” at the League of Legends Worlds Finals Opening Ceremony in 2024.
