Automatic was formed in 2017 in Los Angeles, California, by Izzy Glaudini (synths, vocals), Halle Saxon (bass, vocals), and Lola Dompé (drums, vocals). The band’s name is derived from a track by The Go-Go’s, “Automatic,” from their album *Beauty and the Beat*. The members initially connected within Los Angeles’ DIY music scene before forming the group. Lola Dompé, daughter of Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins, started her musical career earlier, joining the art-rock band Blackblack at the age of 13. The trio signed with the Los Angeles-based label Stones Throw in June 2019, marking a significant step in their professional music journey.
Automatic released their debut album, *Signal*, on September 27, 2019, following the singles “Calling It,” and a cover of Delta 5’s “Mind Your Own Business,” and the title track “Signal.” *Pitchfork* described *Signal* as “an exercise in post-punk and no-wave galvanism,” highlighting the band’s distinctive sound. Following the success of their debut, they released *Signal Remixes* on March 26, 2021, featuring contributions from artists such as Peanut Butter Wolf, Sudan Archives, Peaking Lights, Osees’ John Dwyer, and Kevin Haskins. The band has performed at festivals including Primavera Sound, Desert Daze, and Wide Awake, and toured across the U.S., UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, sharing stages with acts like IDLES, Tame Impala, Crumb, and Parquet Courts.
On March 8, 2022, Automatic announced their second album, *Excess*, with the lead single “New Beginning,” which *Stereogum* characterized as “’60s pop kitsch.” This was followed by the single “Venus Hour” on April 7, 2022. *Excess* was released on June 24, 2022, through Stones Throw, and gained acclaim for its commentary on corporate greed and the climate emergency, receiving positive reviews from *The New York Times*, *Stereogum*, and others. KCRW, Los Angeles’ #1 indie music station, named *Excess* its #4 album of the year. On June 16, 2025, the band released “Is It Now?”, followed by the announcement on July 22nd that the new album “Is It Now?” would be released on September 26, 2025.
