Bad Bad Hats is an indie pop band that has made significant strides in the music industry since its formation in 2012 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Comprising talented musicians Kerry Alexander, Chris Hoge, and Connor Davison, the band quickly garnered attention for their unique sound, which blends elements of indie rock, pop-punk, and folk. Their name, inspired by a character from the children’s book Madeline, reflects their playful yet impactful approach to music.
The band’s journey began when Alexander and Hoge, who met at Macalester College, decided to collaborate after discovering each other’s music online. Their initial performances showcased a mix of acoustic and garage rock, leading to the release of lo-fi demos on Bandcamp. In 2013, they launched their debut EP, It Hurts, which set the stage for their first full-length album, Psychic Reader, released in 2015. This album received critical acclaim, opening doors for high-profile gigs alongside renowned artists such as Third Eye Blind and Margaret Glaspy.
In 2018, Bad Bad Hats continued to evolve with the release of their second album, Lightning Round, which showcased a more refined sound and was produced by Brett Bullion. The band’s ability to adapt and grow was evident as they performed at major events like South by Southwest in 2019. Their third LP, Walkman, released in September 2021, further solidified their presence in the indie music scene.
Most recently, Bad Bad Hats released their fourth self-titled album in April 2024, demonstrating their commitment to creating relatable and engaging music. With a reputation for expertly produced tracks and relatable lyrics, Bad Bad Hats continues to captivate audiences and critics alike, positioning themselves as a standout act in the contemporary music landscape.
