Bathe

Bathe is an R&B duo from Brooklyn, New York, comprising singer-songwriter Devin Hobdy and producer Corey Smith-West. The duo formed after meeting in college and initially collaborated in various musical projects, including a group named Indigold with Ivy Sole, before establishing themselves as Bathe. Their early work focused on developing a distinct sound, integrating influences from surf-rock, Caribbean music, and traditional R&B, which they describe as a “velvety, shimmering sonic universe.” This foundation led to their debut EP, “I’ll Miss You,” released in 2019, which introduced their blend of introspective lyrics and atmospheric production.

The duo’s creative process often draws on personal experiences and cultural backgrounds. Hobdy, whose family roots extend to the American South, Nevis, and Cuba, informs the lyrical narratives with themes of African American identity and the concept of ‘home.’ Smith-West, with his Jamaican heritage, integrates elements of dancehall and rocksteady into their production, contributing to the genre-bending quality of their music. Their approach to music-making emphasizes a tight sonic identity across their albums, aiming to create immersive listening experiences.

A significant milestone for Bathe was the release of their sophomore album, “Bicoastal,” in October 2021. The album explored themes of stagnancy, escape, and the evolving definition of ‘home,’ with singles like “Bolero” showcasing their ability to weave intricate personal narratives with their signature sound. “Bolero” notably combined Cuban Spanish and dreamy reverb with recordings from the L train subway. Bathe has consistently highlighted the importance of community in their journey, acknowledging the support and collaborative spirit within the Brooklyn music scene.
