Christian Yu, known professionally as DPR Ian, was born on September 6, 1990, in Sydney, Australia. Raised by his mother after his parents separated, he attended Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts, where he developed an early interest in music, playing in a heavy metal band and drawing inspiration from musicals and circuses. In 2008, at the age of 18, he began uploading videos to YouTube under the name B Boy B.yu. After studying science and art at the University of Sydney for a year, he moved to South Korea to pursue dancing. His path shifted when he was street-cast by an entertainment agency, leading to his debut in the K-pop industry.
In 2012, Yu debuted as Rome, the leader of the six-member K-pop boy group C-Clown under Yedang Entertainment. After the group disbanded in October 2015, Yu co-founded Dream Perfect Regime (DPR) with Live, Cream, and REM. This collective allowed him to expand his artistic contributions beyond performing, embracing roles as a director and producer. Under DPR, he is recognized for his visual arts direction, having directed music videos for DPR Live, including “Jasmine,” “Legacy,” and “Yellow Cab,” as well as his own tracks like “So Beautiful,” “No Blueberries,” and “Ballroom Extravaganza.” He also extended his directorial work to artists outside DPR, directing videos such as Bobby’s “HOLUP,” Mino’s “Body,” and Taeyang’s “Wake Me Up.
DPR Ian made his solo music debut with the digital single “So Beautiful” on October 26, 2020. This was followed by his debut extended play, Moodswings in This Order, in 2021, and his first studio album, Moodswings In To Order, released on July 29, 2022. The latter peaked at number 30 on the Circle Chart in South Korea and number 146 on the Billboard 200 in the US. In 2021, DPR Ian collaborated with DPR Live on “Diamonds + and Pearls” for the soundtrack of the Marvel film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, making them among the first Korean artists to contribute to a Marvel soundtrack. He continued to release EPs, including Dear Insanity in 2023 and Saint in 2024, demonstrating consistent musical output and creative development. His artistry often explores themes related to mental health, personifying his experiences with bipolar and dissociative identity disorders through his music and visual narratives.
