Billy Currington

William Matthew Currington was born on November 19, 1973, in Savannah, Georgia, and later raised in Rincon, Georgia. His early life included efforts to pursue a music career, leading him to Nashville after high school. Initially, he worked in various jobs, including for a concrete company and as a personal trainer. These early experiences provided a foundation for his music, with some of his songs reflecting personal aspects of his upbringing.

Currington’s career began to take shape when one of his personal training clients helped him secure opportunities to record demo tapes and write songs. This led to his compositions being recorded by established artists such as George Strait, Tracy Byrd, and Marty Raybon. In 2003, Currington signed with Mercury Records Nashville, marking a significant turning point. That same year, he released his self-titled debut album, which featured the single “Walk a Little Straighter,” a song he began writing at age 12 about his relationship with his stepfather. This song reached No. 8 on the Hot Country Songs chart.

His career progression continued with the release of subsequent albums, producing a string of successful singles. “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right” from his 2005 album “Doin’ Somethin’ Right” became his first number one hit, followed by other chart-toppers like “Good Directions” in 2007, co-written by Luke Bryan. He consistently released new music, earning multiple number one singles on both the Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts throughout the 2000s and 2010s. His album “Summer Forever” (2015) notably produced three consecutive number one hits, including “It Don’t Hurt Like It Used To” and “Do I Make You Wanna,” with the latter setting a Billboard Country Airplay record in 2017 for audience gained over the number two song.
