About

William Ray Cyrus was born on August 25, 1961, in Flatwoods, Kentucky. His early life was influenced by bluegrass and gospel music, stemming from a family of musicians. He attended Georgetown College on a baseball scholarship before pursuing a music career, setting a goal to establish himself in ten months. Before achieving mainstream success, Cyrus encountered difficulties, including periods of financial hardship while seeking a record deal in Los Angeles. In the 1980s, he performed with a band named Sly Dog. By 1990, he signed with PolyGram/Mercury Records and opened for Reba McEntire, leading to the release of his debut album.

In 1992, Cyrus released “Some Gave All,” which achieved significant commercial success. The album debuted at number one on multiple charts, including the Billboard Top Country Albums and the Billboard 200, where it remained for 17 consecutive weeks. This album is noted as the best-selling debut album of all time by a solo male artist, selling over 20 million copies worldwide. Its lead single, “Achy Breaky Heart,” became a global hit, topping the U.S. Hot Country Songs chart and becoming the first single to achieve triple platinum status in Australia. The song’s music video also contributed to the rise in popularity of line dancing. Throughout the 1990s, Cyrus released several more albums and continued to chart singles, including “Could’ve Been Me” and “In the Heart of a Woman.

Cyrus diversified his career by transitioning into acting in the late 1990s, with roles in films like “Radical Jack” and “Mulholland Drive.” From 2001 to 2004, he starred in the television series “Doc,” which became a highly rated show. He gained further widespread recognition for his role as Robby Ray Stewart in the Disney Channel series “Hannah Montana” from 2006 to 2011, alongside his daughter Miley Cyrus. In recent years, Cyrus experienced a resurgence in his music career through collaborations, most notably with Lil Nas X on the remix of “Old Town Road” in 2019. This collaboration led to his first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned him two Grammy Awards.
