Matthew Tyler Musto, professionally known as Blackbear, was born on November 27, 1990, in Daytona Beach, Florida, and raised in Palm Coast. His early musical influences included punk and emo bands like Rancid and Blink-182. During his high school years, Musto fronted the rock band Polaroid, releasing an album and an EP, and later signed with Leakmob Records as a teenager. He decided to leave school in the 10th grade to dedicate himself to his music career. After leaving Polaroid, Musto relocated to Atlanta to work with R&B artist Ne-Yo, marking a shift in his musical direction. He released several EPs as a solo artist, including “Brightness” (2008), “Contrast” (2009), and “Exposure” (2010), before adopting the Blackbear moniker in late 2011.
Blackbear’s career gained significant momentum when he co-wrote Justin Bieber’s hit song “Boyfriend” in 2012, which reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. This success facilitated his pursuit of an R&B career, leading to the release of his debut EP “Foreplay” and mixtape “Sex” in 2012, featuring collaborations with artists such as Mike Posner, James Blake, and Maejor Ali. He also made an appearance on Machine Gun Kelly’s album “Lace Up” in the same year. In 2014, Blackbear released “The Afterglow” EP, which charted on Billboard’s Uncharted artists list, and notably became one of the first independent artists to monetize streaming on SoundCloud.
Over the years, Blackbear released six studio albums, including “Deadroses” (2015), “Digital Druglord” (2017), and “Everything Means Nothing” (2020), with several albums reaching the Billboard 200 chart. His single “Hot Girl Bummer” (2019) achieved significant commercial success, reaching number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning a 6x platinum certification from the RIAA. He has consistently collaborated with a wide array of artists across various genres, including Ellie Goulding, All Time Low, Machine Gun Kelly, and Travis Barker, demonstrating his versatility and broad appeal. In 2016, he formed the alternative hip-hop duo Mansionz with Mike Posner, releasing their self-titled debut album in 2017 and a follow-up, “Mansionz 2,” in 2023. Blackbear’s career has also seen him transition to different labels, signing a notable distribution deal with Interscope in 2017 and later joining Columbia Records under Sony Music Entertainment.
