About

Body Count is an American heavy metal band originating from Los Angeles in 1990. The group was co-founded by rapper Ice-T, who serves as the vocalist and lyricist, and lead guitarist Ernie C, driven by their shared passion for heavy metal music. Early members included D-Roc the Executioner on rhythm guitar, Beatmaster V on drums, and Mooseman on bass, all classmates of Ice-T from Crenshaw High School. The band made its initial album appearance on Ice-T’s 1991 solo album “O.G. Original Gangster” with a self-titled track and later released their debut album “Body Count” in 1992 through Sire Records.

The debut album gained significant attention, particularly due to the controversial song “Cop Killer.” Despite defending the song initially, Ice-T made the decision to remove it from the album, feeling the controversy overshadowed the music. Following this, the band departed from Sire Records. Over the years, Body Count experienced several lineup changes and tragedies, with three original members—D-Roc, Beatmaster V, and Mooseman—passing away due to various causes. Despite these challenges, Ice-T and Ernie C continued to lead the band, releasing subsequent albums such as “Born Dead” (1994) and “Violent Demise: The Last Days” (1997).

The band has seen a resurgence in recent years, signing with Sumerian Records for “Manslaughter” (2014) and Century Media Records for “Bloodlust” (2017) and “Carnivore” (2020). Their song “Bum Rush” from the “Carnivore” album earned them a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2021, marking a significant milestone. Body Count released their latest album, “Merciless,” in November 2024. Their music consistently addresses social and political issues, delivered with a mix of heavy metal and hardcore punk influences, maintaining a distinct voice within the genre.
