Garrett Clark Borns, known professionally as Børns, was born on January 7, 1992, in Muskegon, Michigan, and grew up in Grand Haven. His early life showcased diverse talents, including performing as a magician named “Garrett the Great” at age 10. By age 13, he received a Gold Key Award in the National Scholastic Art Awards for his drawings, which included an $8,000 college scholarship to the Kendall College of Art and Design. He further pursued his artistic interests by studying at Michigan’s Interlochen Center for the Arts’ summer program at 14. During his high school years, Borns was involved in filmmaking, took classical piano classes at Grand Rapids Community College, and studied jazz at Muskegon Community College, demonstrating an early and extensive engagement with the arts.
His musical career began to take shape in various local projects. In high school, he briefly performed in a cover band called “Brown Chicken Brown Trout,” performing at the Waterfront Film Festival in 2010. By 2012, he formed The Garrett Borns Trio, releasing the early EP “A Dream Between,” which featured tracks like “Mitten.” After relocating to Los Angeles from New York City in 2013, Borns co-wrote “10,000 Emerald Pools” with producer Jack Kennedy. This collaboration led to his signing with Interscope Records and the release of his debut EP, “Candy,” in 2014, which peaked at number two on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. His debut studio album, “Dopamine,” released in 2015, achieved commercial success, reaching number 24 in the US and featuring the platinum-certified single “Electric Love.” Borns then embarked on various tours, supporting artists like Charli XCX, Bleachers, and Halsey, and performing at major festivals such as Coachella in 2016.
His second album, “Blue Madonna,” released on January 12, 2018, included singles like “God Save Our Young Blood” featuring Lana Del Rey, which charted on the US rock chart. He further promoted the album through the MoneyMan Tour and by supporting Lana Del Rey on her LA to the Moon Tour. Following a hiatus from 2018 to 2023, he returned with the EP “Suddenly” in July 2023, and in October 2024, he released “Letting Myself Go” as a single, followed by “Grateful For” in December, leading up to the release of his “Honeybee” EP in January 2025. Throughout his career, Borns has maintained a public image associated with a “gender-bender” movement, incorporating nail polish and crop-tops in his style and performances, contributing to his distinctive artistic persona.
