Yumi Zouma originated in Christchurch, New Zealand, formed by Christie Simpson, Josh Burgess, Charlie Ryder, and Olivia Campion. Their collaborative process began over email after members moved abroad, following the Christchurch earthquake. This remote songwriting approach facilitated the creation of early material that quickly gained attention within the music blogosphere, leading to their signing with the American label Cascine before they had performed live or conducted a band practice. The band’s debut, ‘EP I,’ was released in early 2014, followed by ‘EP II’ in 2015. During this period, they extensively toured Europe, Asia, and North America, supporting artists such as Lorde, Jamie xx, and Lower Dens.
The band released their first full-length album, ‘Yoncalla,’ in 2016, with much of the recording taking place at Philippe Zdar’s Motorbass studio in Paris. This allowed for a sound that drew closer to classic synth-pop. This was followed by their second album, ‘Willowbank,’ in 2017, which marked their first time recording together in a professional studio in New Zealand, resulting in a more collaborative and organically instrumented sound. In 2018, ‘EP III’ was released, returning to their long-distance writing methods. The group signed with Polyvinyl Record Co. and Inertia Music in 2020, releasing their third album, ‘Truth or Consequences,’ along with a reimagined edition, ‘Truth or Consequences – Alternate Versions’. Their fourth full-length album, ‘Present Tense,’ was released in 2022, recorded remotely across multiple global locations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, showcasing their adaptability and continued musical evolution.
Throughout their career, Yumi Zouma has consistently released EPs and singles, demonstrating a steady progression in their musical style and production. They have continued to evolve their sound and working methods, adapting from initial remote collaborations to in-person studio recordings and back to remote processes, maintaining a consistent output of new music and touring schedules.
