Breaking Benjamin is an American rock band formed in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, in 1999 by lead singer and guitarist Benjamin Burnley and drummer Jeremy Hummel. The band’s early lineup also included guitarist Aaron Fink and bassist Mark James Klepaski. Their initial breakthrough came with the track “Polyamorous” which gained significant radio play. This led to their signing with Hollywood Records, and the release of their debut album, “Saturate,” in 2002. “Saturate” reached No. 136 on the Billboard 200 and was later certified gold in 2015.
The band’s second album, “We Are Not Alone,” released in 2004, further established their presence, selling 48,000 copies in its first week and peaking at No. 20 on the Billboard 200. This album achieved platinum certification in 2005. Following a lineup change, with Chad Szeliga joining as drummer, they released “Phobia” in 2006, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and achieved platinum status. The album’s lead single, “The Diary of Jane,” was a major success, quickly added to radio playlists and later certified double platinum. Their fourth album, “Dear Agony,” released in 2009, showcased Burnley’s songwriting while sober, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and earning gold certification. The band entered a hiatus in 2010 due to Burnley’s recurring illnesses, during which legal disputes led to further lineup changes.
In 2014, Breaking Benjamin reformed with a new lineup including Aaron Bruch (bass, backing vocals), Keith Wallen (guitar, backing vocals), Jasen Rauch (guitar), and Shaun Foist (drums). This new iteration released “Dark Before Dawn” in 2015, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, their highest chart position to date, and was certified gold in 2016. Their sixth studio album, “Ember,” released in 2018, debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. The band has continued to tour extensively and released an acoustic compilation album, “Aurora,” in 2020. In October 2024, Breaking Benjamin signed a new global recordings agreement with BMG and released the single “Awaken” from their upcoming seventh studio album.
