Alexandria Thom, known professionally as Sandi Thom, was born on August 11, 1981, in Banff, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Her early musical journey began with piano and singing in a band called The Residents from Gourdon. Thom became the youngest student to be accepted into the prestigious Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA), where she graduated with a BA in Performing Arts in 2003. After moving to London in 2004 to focus on songwriting, she signed with Windswept Pacific Music in 2005.
Thom gained widespread recognition in 2006 for her unique “21 Nights from Tooting” webcast series, where she performed live from her flat’s basement. This innovative approach attracted significant media attention and led to a record deal with RCA. Her debut single, “I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair),” released that year, achieved number one positions in the UK Singles Chart, Ireland, and Australia, where it was the highest-selling single of 2006. Her debut album, “Smile… It Confuses People,” also reached number one in the UK and Ireland, earning Platinum certification in the UK and Gold in Australia and New Zealand.
Following her initial success, Thom released “The Pink & the Lily” in 2008 and later established her independent label, Guardian Angel Records. Through this label, she released “Merchants and Thieves” (2010), which garnered commercial success and was nominated for Best Album at the British Blues Awards. She continued to tour internationally, performing at major festivals and unconventional venues, and releasing further albums such as “Flesh and Blood” (2012) and “Ghosts” (2019). Thom has also actively supported charity appeals for Oxfam’s work in Malawi and East Africa.
