Candlemass, a pioneering force in the doom metal genre, was formed in 1984 in Upplands Väsby, Sweden, by bassist and songwriter Leif Edling. The band’s debut album, “Epicus Doomicus Metallicus,” released in 1986, not only established their reputation but also played a crucial role in coining the term ‘epic doom.’ This landmark release showcased their signature sound characterized by heavy, dirge-like riffs and powerful vocals, setting the stage for their influential career.
Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, Candlemass solidified their status as one of the ‘big four’ of doom metal, alongside Pentagram, Saint Vitus, and Trouble. With albums like “Nightfall” and “Tales of Creation,” they continued to push the boundaries of the genre, earning critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase. Their live performances during this period further showcased their musical prowess, culminating in the release of the live album “Live” in 1990.
After a brief hiatus, Candlemass reunited in 2004, bringing back iconic vocalist Messiah Marcolin. The band recorded a self-titled album that won a Swedish Grammy, reaffirming their relevance in the metal scene. Following Marcolin’s departure, they welcomed Robert Lowe, under whose leadership they released the acclaimed “King of the Grey Islands” in 2007, further expanding their discography.
In 2018, Candlemass returned to their roots with the reunion of original vocalist Johan Längqvist, marking a new chapter in their storied career. The release of “The Door to Doom” in 2019, featuring a guest appearance by Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, highlighted their enduring legacy. With their latest album, “Sweet Evil Sun,” released in November 2022, Candlemass continues to captivate audiences, proving their timeless appeal and commitment to the art of doom metal.
