Kim Jong-dae, known professionally as Chen, was born on September 21, 1992, in Daejeon, South Korea, and grew up in Siheung. He began his career as a trainee at SM Entertainment in 2011, making his public debut as the fourth member of EXO in December 2011 at the SBS Gayo Daejeon. His early career also saw him participate in SM Entertainment’s ballad group, SM the Ballad, in 2014, where he performed duets and lent his vocals to the Chinese version of the lead single “Breath.” In July 2014, he released his first solo song, “The Best Luck,” for the drama “It’s Okay, That’s Love,” which earned him recognitions such as “Best OST by a Male Artist” at the 5th So-Loved Awards.
Chen continued to expand his musical footprint through various collaborations and solo initiatives. In 2015, he co-wrote lyrics for EXO’s song “Promise” and made his musical theater debut in “In the Heights.” The same year, he appeared on “King of Mask Singer.” In 2016, he contributed to soundtracks for prominent dramas like “Descendants of the Sun” with the hit duet “Everytime,” and “Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo” with fellow EXO members Xiumin and Baekhyun. This period also marked the formation of EXO-CBX, a sub-unit with Baekhyun and Xiumin, which debuted with the EP “Hey Mama!” in October 2016.
His solo artistic development continued with the release of his debut extended play, “April, and a Flower,” in April 2019, which reached number two on South Korea’s Gaon Album Chart and topped iTunes charts in 32 regions.
