About

Chicano Batman, an American psychedelic rock band, was formed in Los Angeles, California, in 2008. The original members included Eduardo Arenas on bass, guitar, and vocals; Carlos Arévalo on guitars and keyboards; and Bardo Martinez on lead vocals, keyboards, and guitar. Gabriel Villa served as the band’s drummer until recently, though he has not been active since their album ‘Invisible People’. The band’s musical style incorporates elements of psychedelic soul, funk, indie/alternative, progressive rock, and Latin rock, drawing influences from 1960s Brazilian artists like Caetano Veloso and Tropicália music, as well as soul musicians such as Curtis Mayfield and The Delfonics. Their distinct sound, combined with their aesthetic of ruffled shirts and pastel-colored suits, has contributed to a growing following.

In 2014, Chicano Batman’s music was recognized by NPR’s Alt.Latino as a favorite among listeners. The following year, they gained broader national attention by providing support for select dates on Jack White’s Lazaretto Tour 2015. This period also saw them perform at key music festivals, including both weekends of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April 2015, and Ruido Fest in July 2015. Their career progression continued with their signing to ATO Records, where they released ‘Freedom Is Free’ in 2017. They made their late-night television debut on Conan in 2017, further solidifying their presence in the mainstream music scene. Notable festival appearances expanded to include Bonnaroo (2016), LouFest (2016), Sasquatch! Music Festival (2017), Forecastle Festival (2017), FYF (2017), Beer X (2017), and a return to Coachella in 2022. They also appeared as guest stars on the children’s television show ‘Yo Gabba Gabbaland’ in 2026, performing “We Can Help Each Other.”

Their recent work includes the album ‘Invisible People’, released in 2020 through ATO Records, a collaboration with engineer Shawn Everett and producer Leon Michels. On March 29, 2024, Chicano Batman released their new album ‘Notebook Fantasy’ via ATO Records, produced by John Congleton. The band has also engaged in brand partnerships, notably a commercial for Johnnie Walker Scotch whisky in 2017, where they sang “This Land is Your Land.” They are currently on an indefinite hiatus as of 2024.
