DaniLeigh has evolved from a versatile background dancer and choreographer into a recording artist, songwriter, and director, known for her contributions to music videos and her own releases through Def Jam Recordings.
Before DaniLeigh made a name for herself as a Def Jam artist, she toured with Def Jam's Jeremih, YG, and Big Sean as a dancer. Later, she signed with Def Jam Recordings in 2017 as a recording artist.
Danielle Leigh Curiel, professionally known as DaniLeigh, was born on December 20, 1994, in Miami, Florida. Her parents, Vicky and Vladimir Curiel, are from the Dominican Republic. Early in her career, she started by posting covers of popular songs online. She later relocated to Los Angeles, California, where she developed her skills as a choreographer and dancer. A significant early career breakthrough occurred when she worked with Prince on the music video for his single “Breakfast Can Wait,” where she was responsible for directing the video when she was 18 years old. Following this experience, Prince became a mentor until his passing in 2016.
DaniLeigh’s musical journey commenced with her debut single “D.O.S.E” in 2015. She signed with Def Jam Recordings in 2017. Her first successful single, “Play,” released that same year, was identified as an empowerment anthem for women and Latinos and featured Mexican-American rapper Kap G. This period marked her transition from a dancer and choreographer to a recording artist. In 2017, she released her first EP, “Summer with Friends,” followed by “The Plan” in 2018. “The Plan” included collaborations with artists such as YG, Lil Yachty, Lil Baby, and YBN Nahmir. Further popular singles include “Lil Bebe,” later remixed with vocals from Lil Baby, and “Easy,” which featured a remix with Chris Brown.
Throughout her career, DaniLeigh has continued to expand her influence within the music industry. In late 2019, she choreographed the music video “BOP on Broadway” for DaBaby. Her albums include “The Plan” (2018), “Movie” (2020), and “My Side” (2022). She also released extended plays “Summer with Friends” (2017) and “My Present” (2019). DaniLeigh’s musical style incorporates elements of hip hop and Latin music, rooted primarily in R&B. She received a nomination for Best New Artist at the BET Awards in 2020.
