Cody Daniel Johnson, also known as “CoJo,” was born on May 21, 1987, in Sebastopol, Texas. His musical journey began at age 12, influenced by his father, who performed in their local church. Johnson developed proficiency in singing and playing multiple instruments and also cultivated an understanding of music theory. During his early career, he performed at school and local bars while also competing professionally in rodeos and working alongside his father in the prison system. At 19, his prison warden encouraged him to pursue music full-time, marking a turning point in his career.
In 2006, Johnson formed the Cody Johnson Band with his father, Carl, and drummer Nathan Reedy, releasing their first album, “Black and White Label.” The band evolved, with Matt Rogers joining on lead guitar, and later Danny Salinas on bass. Their 2009 album, “Six Strings One Dream,” saw three singles reach the top 10 on the Texas music charts. Johnson’s career gained significant momentum after he departed from his day job with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to focus entirely on music. His 2011 album, “A Different Day,” produced by Trent Willmon, contributed to him winning the 2011 Texas Regional Music Award for New Male Vocalist of the Year.
Johnson continued to build his independent career with success, releasing “Cowboy Like Me” in 2014, which debuted at number 25 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. His 2016 album, “Gotta Be Me,” reached number 2 on the Top Country Albums chart, demonstrating significant commercial success without major label backing. In 2018, Johnson made Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo history as the first unsigned artist to play to a sold-out crowd. He signed with Warner Records Nashville, releasing his major-label debut “Ain’t Nothin’ to It” in 2019, which featured his first Top 40 hit, “On My Way to You.” His song “‘Til You Can’t” received two awards at the Country Music Association Awards in 2022, and his album “Leather” won CMA Album of the Year in 2024.
