About

Linda Bell Viera Caballero, born in Río Piedras, San Juan, Puerto Rico, on March 9, 1969, spent her early life in the South Bronx, New York, where she was influenced by her grandmother’s musicality. Her stage name, La India, was given to her by her grandmother due to her appearance. Her early career began in 1985 at age 16 with the Latin freestyle group TKA, appearing on their single “Come Get My Love.” She later signed with Reprise/Warner Bros. Records, releasing the album “Breaking Night” with dance club hits like “Dancing on the Fire.” Dissatisfied with the pop direction, she chose to pursue salsa music to connect with her heritage.

La India’s definitive shift to salsa came in 1992, catalyzed by legendary bandleader Eddie Palmieri, who produced her first Spanish-language salsa album, “Llego La India via Eddie Palmieri.” This album was critically acclaimed, solidifying her new identity as La India. In 1994, she collaborated with Louie Vega on the house-music single “Love and Happiness” (Yemaya y Ochún). Her album “Dicen Que Soy,” produced by Sergio George, achieved 2x gold certification on Billboard, featuring the hit “Ese Hombre” and a duet with Marc Anthony, “Vivir Lo Nuestro.” This album cemented her status in the Latin-American music scene.

Throughout her career, La India has continued to garner accolades and expand her musical influence. In 1996, she released “Jazzin” with Tito Puente, an English-language album blending swing with Latin elements. That same year, Celia Cruz, the “Queen of Salsa,” bestowed upon her the title “La Princesa de la Salsa” (The Princess of Salsa). La India has received multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations, winning a Latin Grammy for Best Salsa Album in 2016 for “Intensamente La India Con Canciones De Juan Gabriel.” Her single “Sedúceme” topped the U.S. Billboard Hot Latin Tracks, and her 2015 album “Intensamente Con Canciones de Juan Gabriel” made her the Latina woman with the most number-one hits on Billboard’s Tropical chart, surpassing Gloria Estefan.
