Few artists have shaped the lo-fi rock underground with the patience and conviction of David Nance & Mowed Sound, a project rooted in the guitar-forward, self-produced ethos of frontman David Nance. Born in Grand Island, Nebraska, and raised there before relocating to Omaha, Nance gigged locally as a singer-songwriter, cutting lo-fi demo recordings that earned regional attention, including full-album covers of Lou Reed’s Berlin, the Rolling Stones’ Goats Head Soup, and The Beatles’ Beatles for Sale.
In 2013, he moved to Los Angeles, where he recorded three albums’ worth of material that he ultimately scrapped as failed attempts. The persistence paid off: in 2016, Ba Da Bing Records picked up More Than Enough for distribution, followed in 2017 by Negative Boogie, whose July release spurred a United States tour while retaining the raw lo-fi character of his earlier work.
His studio catalog traces the arc: Let’s Argue (2012), Lush Bruises Suck Rice and Barley, Actor’s Diary and Half Assed for Posterity (2013), then Peaced and Slightly Pulverized (2018, as David Nance Group) and Staunch Honey (2020) for Trouble in Mind. The 2024 self-titled album David Nance & Mowed Sound arrived via Third Man Records, marking the band’s latest chapter.
