About

Born Diane Eve Warren on September 7, 1956, in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, California, she displayed an early passion for music, beginning to write songs at age 11. Despite her mother’s initial preference for a secretarial career, her father encouraged her musical aspirations, even purchasing her a 12-string guitar and driving her to auditions. This early support proved foundational to her career. She attended Los Angeles Pierce College and graduated from California State University, Northridge in 1978, though her primary focus remained on refining her songwriting skills during this period. This dedication would soon lead to mainstream recognition.

Warren achieved her first major hit in 1983 with “Solitaire,” recorded by Laura Branigan, which reached number 7 on the US pop charts. By the late 1980s, after joining EMI, she became the first songwriter in Billboard magazine’s history to have seven hit songs by different artists on the charts simultaneously. This remarkable achievement earned her the recognition of EMI’s UK Chairman, Peter Reichardt, who called her “the most important songwriter in the world.” She further solidified her position by founding Realsongs, her own publishing company, through which she maintains the masters of her work. Throughout her career, Warren has received numerous accolades, including an Academy Honorary Award, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and three consecutive Billboard Music Awards for Songwriter of the Year from 1997 to 1999. She has also been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Her extensive catalog includes nine number-one songs and 33 top-10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, featuring iconic tracks like Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time” (1989), Chicago’s “Look Away” (1988), Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me” (1996), LeAnn Rimes’ “How Do I Live” (1997), Bad English’s “When I See You Smile” (1989), and Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” (1998). Her influence extends to film, with her music appearing in over sixty soundtracks. In 2021, she released her debut studio album, “Diane Warren: The Cave Sessions Vol. 1,” showcasing some of her collaborations. A recent milestone occurred in 2023 when “Say Don’t Go,” a song co-written with Taylor Swift in 2013, debuted in the top ten of the US Hot 100 as part of Swift’s “1989 (Taylor’s Version).” In January 2023, she wrote “Gonna Be You” for the film “80 for Brady,” performed by Dolly Parton, Belinda Carlisle, Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry, and Gloria Estefan.
