Erica Banks, born Erica Scharmane Banks in DeSoto, Texas, on October 5, 1998, developed an early interest in writing, excelling in poetry contests during her elementary school years. This passion evolved into rapping during high school. She later enrolled at Texas A&M University–Commerce to study nursing. However, her commitment to music led her to leave college during her sophomore year to pursue a career in the industry. Her early musical efforts included self-releasing her first single, “Talk My Shit,” independently through SoundCloud in 2018, followed by her first official mixtape, “Art of the Hustle,” in March 2019.
A significant turning point in Banks’ career came in April 2019 when she secured a record deal with 1501 Certified Entertainment. This was a direct result of her playing a snippet of her song “Buss It” for the label’s CEO, Carl Crawford, during an Instagram Live session. Despite this signing, she continued to self-release mixtapes, including “Pressure” and “Cocky on Purpose,” later that year. In June 2020, her self-titled fourth mixtape, released through 1501 Certified, featured the full version of “Buss It.” This track gained widespread attention in January 2021, driven by a viral TikTok challenge, which propelled it onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart, marking her first entry.
Following the success of “Buss It,” Erica Banks signed a record deal with Warner Records in January 2021, where the hit single was reissued. Her career progression further included a feature on Yella Beezy’s single “Star” in the same month. In June 2023, she expanded her public presence by joining the eleventh season of the reality television series “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta.” Most recently, in December 2024, Banks signed a new joint venture deal with Arista Records, signifying continued growth in her music career.
