About

Fantasia Monique Barrino-Taylor, known mononymously as Fantasia, was born on June 30, 1984, in High Point, North Carolina. She began singing at the age of five. In 2004, at 19 years old, she rose to national prominence as the winner of the third season of “American Idol,” captivating audiences with her rendition of the “Porgy and Bess” standard “Summertime.” Following her victory, her debut single “I Believe” debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, a rare achievement for a first commercial single, and became the best-selling single in the U.S. that year. Her debut album, “Free Yourself” (2004), achieved platinum certification from the RIAA.

Her career progressed with subsequent albums, including her eponymous second album “Fantasia” (2006) which featured the hit single “When I See U.” In 2005, her autobiography “Life Is Not a Fairy Tale” became a New York Times bestseller and was adapted into a Lifetime Television film in 2006, in which she portrayed herself. Barrino made her Broadway debut in 2007, starring as Celie Johnson in “The Color Purple,” a role she reprised in the 2023 film adaptation. Her performance in the film earned her critical acclaim, including nominations for a Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA Award, and she won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Motion Picture.

Throughout her career, Fantasia has amassed numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for her 2010 single “Bittersweet,” and two Billboard Music Awards. She has consistently achieved top ten hits on the Adult R&B Airplay chart and was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. In 2024, she was recognized by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people, and she is slated to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2025. She also founded her entertainment company, Rock Soul Productions, in 2024, further expanding her professional endeavors.
