Flogging Molly, an Irish-American Celtic punk band, was formed in Los Angeles in 1994. The band’s origins trace back to Dublin-born Dave King, who was previously the lead singer for the heavy metal band Fastway in the 1980s and the hard rock band Katmandu in 1991. King’s desire to incorporate traditional Irish instruments into his music led him to leave his record deal with Epic Records. In 1993, he co-founded a rock band with a Celtic influence, playing weekly at Molly Malone’s, a Los Angeles pub. This period saw the creation of songs like “Black Friday Rule” and “Selfish Man,” which laid the foundation for Flogging Molly’s sound. The band’s name itself pays homage to Molly Malone’s, the bar that consistently supported them from their early days.
Flogging Molly’s career progression is marked by consistent album releases and extensive touring. Their debut studio album, “Swagger,” was released in 2000, followed by “Drunken Lullabies” in 2002, which achieved RIAA gold certification in 2009. The band debuted on the Vans Warped Tour in 2000 and returned in 2003, sharing stages with notable bands. “Within a Mile of Home” (2004) debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard 200. The acoustic/live CD/DVD “Whiskey on a Sunday” (2006) achieved platinum certification two years later. Their fourth studio album, “Float” (2008), reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and produced two singles, “Requiem for a Dying Song” (No. 35) and the title track (No. 40) on the Billboard Modern Rock charts.
The band continued to expand their reach, appearing on “Austin City Limits” in 2011. Their 2011 album, “Speed of Darkness,” was their first release on their own label, Borstal Beat Records. “Life Is Good” (2017) was released through Vanguard Records and Spinefarm. In recent years, Flogging Molly has embarked on co-headlining tours with bands like Social Distortion (2019) and The Interrupters (2022). They also initiated the Salty Dog Cruises in 2015, an annual Caribbean cruise featuring performances by the band and other artists. In 2024, the band announced the inaugural Shamrock Rebellion Fest. However, due to health issues experienced by Dave King, some touring and cruise appearances in 2025 and 2026 have been impacted to prioritize his recovery.
