Flyana Boss, composed of Bobbi LaNea and Folayan Kunerede, originated in Los Angeles, California, after the two met at the Musicians Institute on Hollywood Boulevard. Bobbi LaNea, from Detroit, MI, and Folayan Kunerede, from Dallas, initially found connection through their shared musical interests and a mutual appreciation for artists like Diana Ross and Beyoncé, who influenced their duo’s name. They first met in their initial year at the Institute and, after graduating, officially formed Flyana Boss in mid-2019. Their early career progression saw them secure management a few months later and develop their distinct sound with producer Marky Style, aiming to highlight joy and individuality in their music. Both artists are known for their colorful aesthetics, often featuring changing hair colors, elf ears, and unique fashion.
The duo began performing in early 2020, though their momentum was temporarily disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, Flyana Boss experienced a significant breakthrough in 2023 with the release of their single “You Wish” as part of their _Make It a Double_ EP in June. The song quickly achieved viral status online, largely due to a series of distinctive videos created by videographer Evan Blum. These videos featured LaNea and Kunerede sprinting through diverse locations such as grocery stores, the Santa Monica Pier, and Disneyland, generating widespread attention on platforms like TikTok and attracting notable figures including Lil Nas X, Missy Elliott, and Timbaland. This widespread success led to them re-evaluating their previous release plans to capitalize on the moment.
Flyana Boss signed with Atlantic Records in July 2021, a pivotal step in their career that followed a joint venture with their record label, Vnclm_. Beyond their musical releases, they have expanded their presence through touring and brand collaborations. In 2023, they supported Janelle Monáe on “The Age of Pleasure Tour” and Kesha on the “Only Love Tour.” Their growing visibility has also resulted in partnerships with various companies, demonstrating their broad appeal and impact across different commercial sectors. Their ongoing work aims to showcase their unique artistic vision and humor to a global audience.
