Hockey Dad, comprised of Zach Stephenson (lead vocalist and guitarist) and Billy Fleming (drums, percussion, and backing vocals), formed in Windang, New South Wales, in 2013. The duo met in 1999 at early ages while playing football on the same street. Prior to forming Hockey Dad, they played in a high school band called Abstract Classic. The band name is derived from a video game in a 2003 episode of ‘The Simpsons’. Their musical style is rooted in 1960s garage rock, with stated influences including Bass Drum of Death, Sparkadia, and Band of Horses. Stephenson draws inspiration from his father’s 1980s Australian punk and rock collection, while Fleming is influenced by his older brother’s 1990s punk music.
The band’s debut, the EP ‘Dreamin”, was released in June 2014, leading to their signing with Wollongong-based independent label Farmer & the Owl later that year. Since then, Hockey Dad has released four studio albums: ‘Boronia’ (2016), ‘Blend Inn’ (2018), ‘Brain Candy’ (2020), and ‘Rebuild Repeat’ (2024). ‘Brain Candy’ reached number 2 on the ARIA Charts, and ‘Blend Inn’ peaked at number 6. They also released a live album, ‘Live at the Drive In’ (2021), which charted at number 22.
Hockey Dad has conducted extensive tours both nationally and internationally, including multiple North American tours in 2017 and 2024, and the ‘Blend Inn Tour’ across Australia and New Zealand in 2018. They have secured numerous nominations, including ‘Australian Album of the Year’ at the J Awards in 2018 for ‘Blend Inn’, and ‘Most Performed Rock Work’ at the 2021 APRA Awards for “I Missed Out”. Their consistent release schedule and touring activities demonstrate their career progression and dedication to their musical craft.
