The Isley Brothers, originating from Cincinnati, Ohio, began their musical journey in 1954 as a vocal trio consisting of O’Kelly Isley Jr., Rudolph Isley, and Ronald Isley. Initially performing gospel music with their fourth brother Vernon, the group transitioned to popular music after Vernon’s early passing. Their impactful career began to take shape with their move to New York City, leading to their first major success in 1959 with “Shout,” a blend of gospel and doo-wop that sold over a million copies and marked their debut on the Billboard Hot 100. Over subsequent years, they recorded for various labels, achieving another top 20 hit with “Twist and Shout” in 1962 and the Motown single “This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You).” A significant turning point occurred when they formed their own label, T-Neck Records, which led to the Grammy Award-winning hit “It’s Your Thing” in 1969.
The group expanded in 1973 with the addition of younger brothers Ernie (lead guitar, drums) and Marvin (bass guitar), alongside brother-in-law Chris Jasper (keyboards, synthesizers), transforming the vocal trio into a full band. This expanded lineup led to their most commercially successful period, producing a series of top-selling albums throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. Notable albums during this era include “3 + 3,” “Between the Sheets,” and “The Heat Is On,” with the latter reaching number one on the Billboard 200 chart. After a subsequent split in 1983 and the passing of O’Kelly in 1986, Ronald and Ernie continued to perform, achieving renewed mainstream success with albums like “Mission to Please” (1996) and “Eternal” (2001), which featured the top 20 hit “Contagious.” Their album “Body Kiss” also reached number one on the Billboard 200 in 2003, showcasing their enduring appeal.
The Isley Brothers have demonstrated remarkable longevity and adaptability, maintaining a presence on the Billboard Hot 100 across six consecutive decades, a unique achievement in music history. They have sold over 18 million units in the United States and have been recognized by numerous institutions for their contributions to music. Inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1992), Hollywood’s Rockwalk (1997), and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame (2003) acknowledge their significant impact. In 2014, they received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, further solidifying their legacy as one of the most influential and enduring groups in American popular music. As of 2025, the group continues to perform with Ronald and Ernie Isley.
