Hope Natasha McDonald, known professionally as Hope Tala, was born on November 18, 1997, in London, England. She is of Jamaican and British-Irish heritage. Her musical journey began during her childhood, learning various instruments, and she started singing at the age of 15. She later experimented with Logic Pro, releasing demos on SoundCloud. Tala pursued higher education at the University of Bristol, studying English literature, and graduated with first-class honors in 2019. During her university years, she released her early EPs, ‘Starry Ache’ and ‘Sensitive Soul’. She chose to pursue a music career over a master’s degree at the University of Cambridge, viewing music as a “one-shot career” where opportunities might not repeat.
Tala’s career progressed with the release of her debut single “Blue” in 2018, followed by “Lovestained” and “D.T.M.” in 2019. “Lovestained” gained notable recognition, being placed at number 8 on Rolling Stone’s “50 Best Songs of 2019” list. In 2020, her song “All My Girls Like To Fight” was released and later included in her EP ‘Girl Eats Sun’. This track was also recognized by Barack Obama, appearing on his list of favorite songs of 2020. Her single “Tiptoeing” was selected as BBC Radio One’s “Hottest Record in the World” by Clara Amfo in 2021. Throughout her career, Tala has consistently developed her style, drawing from R&B, Latin, neo-soul, and bossa nova influences.
Looking ahead, Hope Tala released her debut studio album, ‘Hope Handwritten’, in February 2025. This project includes singles like “I Can’t Even Cry,” “Bad Love God,” “Thank Goodness,” “Shiver,” “Jumping the Gun,” “Survival,” and “Phoenix.” She has also performed as a special guest on Halsey’s 2025 US Tour for seven dates and opened for SZA at BST Hyde Park. Her work has been described as deeply personal and cathartic, focusing on themes such as coming of age and queerness. Tala has demonstrated a commitment to authentic musical expression, prioritizing her artistic vision over current trends. She seeks to create music that connects with listeners on an emotional level.
