About

Andrew John Hozier-Byrne, known as Hozier, was born on March 17, 1990, near Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. Raised in a Quaker household, his early exposure to music came from his parents’ blues, jazz, and soul record collections, featuring artists like John Lee Hooker and Nina Simone. He began writing songs at 15, learning guitar and singing in his school choir. Hozier studied music education at Trinity College Dublin, where he was involved with the Trinity Orchestra and toured with the choral ensemble Anúna from 2009 to 2012. He participated in the Oxegen festivals in 2009 and 2010. His formative years were shaped by music and activism, drawing inspiration from artist-activists like Nina Simone and Woody Guthrie.

Hozier achieved widespread recognition with his debut single “Take Me to Church” in 2013. The song became a rock radio hit in the U.S., peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning multi-platinum certifications. The accompanying music video, addressing homophobia, garnered significant attention after being shared by Stephen Fry. His eponymous debut studio album, released in 2014, was certified 6x platinum in Ireland and multi-platinum in other countries. The album yielded additional singles such as “From Eden,” “Sedated,” “Work Song,” “Someone New,” and “Cherry Wine.” He performed “Take Me to Church” at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards with Annie Lennox in 2015, where the song was nominated for Song of the Year. He also received the VH1 Artist of the Year award in 2015.

After a hiatus, Hozier released the EP “Nina Cried Power” in 2018, featuring Mavis Staples, followed by his second album, “Wasteland, Baby!” in 2019. This album debuted atop the Irish Albums Chart and the Billboard 200. He continued to release new music, including the single “Swan Upon Leda” in 2022, inspired by global events and feminist activism, and collaborated with Bear McCreary for “God of War: Ragnarök.” His third studio album, “Unreal Unearth” (2023), reached number one in Ireland and the UK. In 2024, the EP “Unheard” included “Too Sweet,” which became his first number-one single in Ireland, the US, and the UK, solidifying his position as a prominent musical artist. Hozier consistently uses his platform to address social and political issues, supporting causes like LGBTQ+ rights, anti-homelessness efforts, and racial justice.
