Illiterate Light is an innovative American alternative rock duo formed in 2015 in Harrisonburg, Virginia, consisting of Jeff Gorman and Jake Cochran. The duo quickly gained recognition for their electrifying live performances, characterized by Gorman’s dynamic guitar and synth bass work, alongside Cochran’s unique standing drum kit setup. Their commitment to high-energy shows has earned them a dedicated fanbase and critical acclaim, with the Washington Post describing their sound as “Massive.”
The band’s professional journey took a significant leap with the release of their debut album, “Illiterate Light,” in October 2019 under Atlantic Records. The album received positive reviews, particularly for the single “Better Than I Used To,” which enjoyed a lengthy run on AAA radio charts. Their innovative approach to music, which includes performing without backing tracks, has set them apart in the industry, leading NPR to name them one of the 2020 Artists To Watch.
Following the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Illiterate Light transitioned to an independent path, releasing their sophomore album, “Sunburned,” in January 2023. This album was hailed as one of the best of the year by SPIN magazine, showcasing a maturation in their songwriting with darker, introspective themes. They continued to build on this success with the release of a four-song EP titled “Aloe,” further solidifying their artistic evolution.
In November 2024, Illiterate Light released their third studio album, “Arches,” co-produced by Gorman and Cochran. The album received nominations for its innovative sound, drawing comparisons to influential bands like Radiohead and Foo Fighters. With endorsements from major brands and a growing reputation as one of the top rock bands emerging from the South, Illiterate Light continues to push boundaries and captivate audiences with their unique blend of rock and Americana.
