Imagine Dragons was formed in 2008 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The band’s current lineup includes lead singer Dan Reynolds, guitarist Wayne Sermon, and bassist Ben McKee. Initially formed by Dan Reynolds and drummer Andrew Tolman at Brigham Young University, the band’s name is an anagram known only to its members. Early members included Andrew Beck, Dave Lemke, and Aurora Florence, who were later replaced. The band gained local acclaim in Provo, Utah, and Las Vegas, Nevada, before signing with Interscope Records in 2011. Their breakthrough came with the release of the single “It’s Time” and their debut album, “Night Visions,” in 2012, which peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200.
“Night Visions” spawned the successful singles “Radioactive” and “Demons.” “Radioactive” held the record for most weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the biggest rock hit of 2013 and earning a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance. Imagine Dragons was recognized as MTV’s “biggest breakout band” and Billboard’s “Breakthrough Band of 2013” and “Biggest Band of 2017.” Their second album, “Smoke + Mirrors” (2015), reached number one in the US, Canada, and the UK. This was followed by “Evolve” (2017), featuring the chart-topping singles “Believer,” “Thunder,” and “Whatever It Takes,” making them the artist with the most weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot Rock Songs chart.
The band’s fourth studio album, “Origins” (2018), included the single “Natural,” which also topped the Hot Rock Songs chart. More recently, they released “Mercury – Acts 1 & 2” (2022), a double album with the hit “Enemy,” and “Loom” (2024). Imagine Dragons have won three American Music Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, one Grammy Award, one MTV Video Music Award, and one World Music Award. They were the most streamed group on Spotify in 2018 and are the first rock act to have four songs surpass one billion streams each without long-time drummer Daniel Platzman, who departed in 2024.
