Jennie Kim, born on January 16, 1996, in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, South Korea, embarked on her journey in the entertainment industry at an early age. She moved to New Zealand in 2004, where she developed an interest in K-pop. Returning to South Korea in 2010, she successfully auditioned for YG Entertainment, commencing her training as a performer. Over six years, she honed her skills in singing, rapping, and songwriting. In 2016, she debuted as a member of Blackpink, one of the best-selling girl groups globally. Her initial solo endeavors included features on tracks by G-Dragon, Lee Hi, and Seungri in 2013, prior to her formal solo debut. These early collaborations provided foundational experience in the music production landscape.
Her solo career achieved significant milestones with the release of “Solo” in November 2018, which reached number one on South Korea’s Circle Digital Chart and the US Billboard World Digital Songs chart. The music video for “Solo” was the first by a Korean female soloist to surpass one billion views on YouTube. In 2023, Jennie made her acting debut under the name Jennie Ruby Jane in the HBO series “The Idol.” That same year, she established her independent record label, Odd Atelier. In 2024, she signed with Columbia Records, a move that preceded the release of her debut studio album, “Ruby,” in 2025. This album sold one million copies worldwide, entered the top three on the UK Albums Chart, and featured Billboard Global 200 top-five hits “Mantra” and “Like Jennie.” Her 2026 collaboration with Tame Impala on the “Dracula” remix achieved a top-five position on the US Billboard Hot 100, marking her first top-ten entry on the chart. Jennie’s career has also seen her recognized with significant accolades, including a Billboard Women in Music Award in 2025 for Global Force, and being named to Time’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2026.
