Leonard Albert Kravitz was born on May 26, 1964, in New York City, the only child of NBC television news producer Sy Kravitz and actress Roxie Roker. His mother was of African American and Bahamian descent, and his father was Russian-Jewish. Growing up, Kravitz was exposed to a wide range of musical genres, including R&B, jazz, classical, opera, gospel, and blues, fostering an early passion for music. He started playing drums and later added guitar and piano, with his parents supporting his musical interests through early exposure to live shows from artists like the Jackson 5 and jazz greats like Duke Ellington.
In 1974, at age 10, Kravitz and his family moved to Los Angeles when his mother took a role on “The Jeffersons.” During this period, he joined the California Boys Choir for three years, performing classical repertoire and singing with the Metropolitan Opera. He was introduced to rock music by bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin, alongside other influences like Fela Kuti and Marvin Gaye. Kravitz attended Beverly Hills High School, where he continued to develop his musical skills. He later collaborated with Henry Hirsch, his recording engineer, keyboardist, and bassist, on his debut album, which was self-funded by his father. This collaborative approach and dedication eventually led to a record deal with Virgin Records.
Kravitz released his debut album, “Let Love Rule,” in 1989, blending rock, funk, reggae, hard rock, soul, and R&B. While moderately successful in the U.S., it gained significant traction internationally, particularly in Europe. He continued to build his career with subsequent albums like “Mama Said” (1991), which featured the hit “It Ain’t Over ’til It’s Over,” and “Are You Gonna Go My Way” (1993), which secured his global recognition. Over his career, Kravitz has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, earned four consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance from 1999 to 2002, and ventured into acting with roles in films such as “Precious” and “The Hunger Games” series. He also founded Kravitz Design Inc., a creative studio focusing on interior and product design.
